Feldheim is an unassuming village, located about 60 kilometres (37 miles) southwest of the German capital Berlin. Despite its small population of roughly 130 people, it has achieved something that major world powers still struggle with: total energy independence. The community is entirely self-sufficient, generating all of its own electricity and heat from renewable sources.

The village's transformation began when they realized the potential of the constant winds blowing across their farmland. They now host 55 wind turbines that produce far more electricity than the village consumes. However, the real turning point came when the local utility giant, E.ON, refused to let the villagers use the existing power lines for their local project. In response, the people of Feldheim pooled their resources and built their own private electrical and heating grids.

To ensure the lights stay on when the wind dies down, the village utilizes a sophisticated mix of technologies. A local biogas plant processes manure from cattle and pigs along with silage corn, providing heat through a district network. They also maintain a solar farm and a massive 10-megawatt battery storage facility to balance the load. This diversified approach means they never have to rely on external gas or coal.

The economic benefits have been life-changing for the residents. While electricity prices in Germany are among the highest in Europe, Feldheim’s inhabitants pay significantly less than the national average. By owning their infrastructure, they have created a recession-proof economy where the money spent on energy stays within the community, proving that even the smallest village can lead the way in the global transition to green energy.
