
A team of behavioral ecologists at Queen Mary University of London has discovered that bumblebees are capable of a level of collective intelligence previously thought to be exclusive to humans and chimpanzees. The study, published in the journal PLOS Biology, involved a complex "two-step" puzzle box that required bees to perform a sequence of actions to reach a sugar reward.
To test their theory, researchers trained "demonstrator" bees to solve the puzzle, which involved pushing a blue tab and then a red tab. While untrained bees were completely unable to solve the puzzle on their own—even after many hours of trying—those who watched a trained peer perform the task were able to master it quickly. This indicates that the bees were not just acting on instinct but were participating in a form of "social learning."
The implications of this research are vast, suggesting that invertebrates possess the building blocks for cumulative culture. This means they can share "innovations" that become part of the hive's collective knowledge, allowing the group to perform tasks far beyond the cognitive reach of any single individual. Dr. Alice Bridges and Professor Lars Chittka, who led the research at the university’s campus in London, noted that this challenges the long-held "human exceptionalism" in biology.
By documenting these tiny thinkers, the study shows that the size of a brain does not necessarily limit the complexity of its social behavior. This discovery helps us better understand the evolution of intelligence and underscores the importance of protecting these highly sophisticated pollinators, whose social structures are far more intricate than we ever imagined.
