
The Clarion-Clipperton Zone stretches across six million square kilometres of the central Pacific seafloor, roughly between Hawaii and Mexico, at depths of up to 5,500 metres (18,000 feet). It is one of the least understood ecosystems on Earth — and, as scientists are now confirming, one of the most biologically rich.
Published on March 24, 2026 in the open-access scientific journal ZooKeys, a new study has identified 24 previously unknown species of amphipods — small, shrimp-like crustaceans, most measuring around one centimetre — living in this remote corner of the deep ocean. The research was led by Dr. Anna Jażdżewska of the University of Lodz in Poland and Dr. Tammy Horton of the National Oceanography Centre in Southampton, England, who brought together 16 experts for a week-long workshop in Lodz in 2024 to classify the specimens.
The headline finding is not simply the 24 new species — impressive as that is. It is that one of them belongs to an entirely new superfamily, a biological classification above family level. New species are named regularly; new families are rare; new superfamilies almost never happen. The new superfamily has been named Mirabestioidea, and the new family within it, Mirabestiidae.
The researchers also found that several known genera of amphipods were living significantly deeper than previously believed, and collected the first DNA barcodes — essentially genetic fingerprints — for a number of rare species, making them far easier to monitor and protect in future.
The timing of the discovery carries additional weight. The Clarion-Clipperton Zone is not only a scientific frontier — it is also one of the most contested stretches of ocean floor on Earth, targeted by deep-sea mining operations seeking the polymetallic nodules that litter the seabed. Those same nodules took millions of years to form, and the ecosystems around them — including the creatures described in this study — have evolved in complete darkness over similar timescales. With more than 90% of species in the zone still unnamed, scientists cannot yet fully assess what mining would destroy.
At the current pace of discovery, researchers estimate that the amphipods of the eastern Clarion-Clipperton Zone alone could be nearly fully catalogued within a decade. As Dr. Jażdżewska has noted, a named species has a kind of passport — it can be discussed, protected, and fought for in ways that unnamed creatures simply cannot. Every discovery is a step toward that protection.
