Every time you run a wash cycle with synthetic clothing, millions of tiny plastic fibres pour out with the wastewater and make their way into rivers, oceans, and eventually the food chain. Studies estimate that a single synthetic garment can release up to 1.5 million fibres in one wash. It sounds like an overwhelming problem — until you meet Max Pennington, who decided to stare directly down a manta ray's throat for the answer.

Pennington, an engineering student at Case Western Reserve University in Ohio, became so troubled by microplastic pollution from laundry that he grabbed some mesh, an old cup, and duct tape to make a makeshift filter. One load of laundry later, the thing was crammed full of plastic fibres. That was enough.

He and classmates Chip Miller and David Dillman spent their spare hours — nights, early mornings, whatever was left around their class schedules — building something better. Their inspiration came from the cone-shaped mouths of manta rays, which capture plankton using swirling vortices rather than simply straining water through a flat barrier. Their Vortx filter replicates the trick, trapping microplastics in tiny whirlpools and funnelling them into a disposable pod. The team says it's 300% more effective than traditional filters and, crucially, doesn't clog. They've since launched a startup called Cleanr, and the device — which sits on top of a standard washing machine — is now on sale in the US. Meanwhile, six states including California, Pennsylvania, and Oregon are already discussing laws to make microfibre filters mandatory in new washing machines. Legislators, it seems, are finally catching up with three students and a manta ray.
