
A few miles outside the small desert town of Vicuña — the birthplace of Chile's Nobel Prize-winning poet Gabriela Mistral — a research facility sits camouflaged against the reddish-brown of a harsh rocky slope. This is the Initihuasi Seed Bank, the central hub of a nationwide network quietly working to preserve every one of Chile's 4,655 plant species, 46 percent of which grow nowhere else on Earth.
Inside, behind earthquake-proof concrete walls, a walk-in freezer maintains a steady -4 degrees Fahrenheit and 15 percent humidity. Seeds are stored in aluminum pouches rather than glass, a practical concession to Chile's earthquake-prone geology. Among the thousands of packets are species that were once thought to be gone for good: one specimen was declared extinct at the turn of the 19th century. A blue crocus, exported to Europe as an ornamental plant, was rediscovered in the Andes near Santiago a full 50 years after scientists had declared it extinct — and promptly sent to Initihuasi for safekeeping.
Researcher Ana Sandoval, who has worked at the facility for more than a decade, describes the work as deeply purposeful. The bank's reach extends well beyond Chile's borders: duplicates of bean species are held in Colombia, and maize varieties are stored in the famous Global Seed Vault in Svalbard, Norway, far above the Arctic Circle. Carlos Furche, director of the national seed bank network and a former Chilean Minister of Agriculture, has spent 50 years working in global food systems. He sees what's stored here as essential currency for an uncertain future, noting that the bank's collection will allow Chile to adapt to new climate demands while continuing to grow its reserves.
