
For years, Africa has been perceived as a marginal player in the global solar market. That narrative is rapidly changing. The African Solar Industry Association's latest report demonstrates that solar deployment across the continent is accelerating at a pace that outstrips every other region worldwide in relative terms, positioning Africa as a leader rather than a latecomer in the renewable energy transition.
The numbers tell a compelling story. Africa's operational solar capacity reached 23.4 gigawatts by the end of 2025, representing a 26 percent increase from the previous year. This growth spans the full spectrum of solar applications, from massive utility-scale installations powering national grids to rooftop systems on homes and businesses, mini-grids serving remote communities, and standalone solar home systems.
While South Africa maintains its position as the continental leader with over 18 gigawatts of identified capacity and adding 1.6 gigawatts in recent years, the solar landscape is diversifying. Egypt added approximately 500 to 700 megawatts in 2024. Nigeria contributed 803 megawatts. Ghana, Burkina Faso, Zambia, and others are scaling projects at meaningful rates. Ten African countries surpassed the 100-megawatt annual installation threshold in 2025, double the number from the previous year.
Perhaps most significantly, battery energy storage systems have transformed solar from an intermittent resource into a dispatchable power solution capable of delivering electricity around the clock. Analysis shows that converting daytime solar into fully dispatchable power using storage now costs approximately 33 dollars per megawatt-hour. Combined with generation costs, this delivers 24-hour solar electricity at roughly 76 dollars per megawatt-hour, making it competitive with and often cheaper than new fossil fuel generation, particularly in countries dependent on imported fuels.
The implications extend beyond numbers. More than half of African countries now generate at least 10 percent of their power from solar. Industrial facilities that once relied on diesel generators are switching to solar-plus-storage systems. Remote communities gaining access to electricity for the first time are bypassing traditional grid infrastructure entirely. Manufacturing is also taking root, with Nigeria establishing partnerships for gigawatt-scale solar panel production facilities and Zimbabwe announcing domestic manufacturing plans.
John van Zuylen, chief executive of the African Solar Industry Association, emphasized that perception no longer reflects reality. Solar is already far more widespread than previously believed, and Africa is experiencing the fastest solar growth of any region worldwide, he noted. Looking ahead, projections suggest the continent will add another 23 gigawatts by 2028, effectively doubling current deployment and moving closer to the goal of 300 gigawatts by 2030.
