
Seagrass meadows rank among the ocean's most powerful yet overlooked ecosystems. Though covering less than 0.2 percent of the seafloor, they account for 10 percent of the ocean's carbon storage capacity—capturing carbon up to 35 times faster than tropical rainforests. These underwater flowering plants filter pollutants, cycle nutrients, protect coastlines from erosion, and provide nursery habitat for fish and marine life. A single 10,000-square-meter meadow can support 80,000 fish and over a million invertebrates.
Yet globally, seagrass beds are declining at roughly 7 percent per year, threatened by coastal development, dredging, and pollution.
In 2014, that decline became starkly visible off Malaysia's coast. Dredgers working on a massive land reclamation project to build "Forest City" at the tip of Peninsular Malaysia dispersed sediment plumes across the Merambong Shoal, destroying roughly 10 hectares of vibrant meadows. The Department of Environment issued a stop-work order, but the damage was done.
What happened next transformed a conservation disaster into a blueprint for hope.
Marine scientists at the University of Putra Malaysia partnered with developer Country Garden Pacificview to attempt restoring the tropical seagrass meadows. Lead researcher Muta Harah Zakaria and her colleagues brought decades of knowledge—they'd studied these particular seagrasses since 1999.
Their approach centered on understanding how different species naturally grow together. Tall, wide-leaved Enhalus acoroides flourished around patch edges, creating protective canopies where smaller, fast-spreading Halophila species thrived underneath.
They cultured 8,591 seedlings in laboratory tanks, then planted them between 2015 and 2024. First came the larger Enhalus acoroides to stabilize barren areas. Then they mixed in three types of Halophila.
Survival rates reached 66 percent in mixed-species plots—significantly higher than single-species plots. As meadows stabilized, nine additional seagrass species naturally returned, including Halophila nipponica, never before recorded in Malaysia.
"We found four new species records in that particular area, and our colleagues recorded more than 100 species of invertebrates," Zakaria said.
The restoration now hosts 13 of Malaysia's 17 seagrass species, proving that even meadows destroyed by development can recover—given time, knowledge, and the right combination of species.
