The new treatment uses HPMC, an inexpensive, transparent gel routinely employed in eye surgeries. Patients in the study received injections every two to four weeks, with the gel safely increasing eye volume and pressure. Mr. Harry Petrushkin, consultant ophthalmologist at Moorfields who developed the treatment, expressed excitement about how this straightforward approach has proven effective for such a challenging condition.

After trying various treatments including steroids and silicone oil with limited success, she advocated for alternative options when she lost vision in her left eye. When her consultants at Moorfields trialed the HPMC injections, her vision gradually returned. She described watching her pressure improve and her sight come back as incredible, especially knowing previous patients faced irreversible blindness.

Moorfields has now treated 35 hypotony patients with promising sustained results. The team is applying for funding for large-scale clinical trials to establish this as standardized treatment nationally, potentially helping hundreds or thousands of patients maintain their vision.

Since returning after the fall of Bashar al-Assad's regime in 2024, he has restored eight schools, often bringing his own generator and workers even when it affects his private business. When schools call, he goes directly—he has never refused.

Abdul Monim Al-Moayni, 53, who owns a workshop, carries motivation rooted in past disappointment. Years before the uprising, he offered to volunteer building a health clinic but was rejected in favor of people with connections. The feeling of falling short stayed with him. When colleagues mentioned the school campaign, he contacted Al-Okaidi immediately, organizing his schedule to protect his business while remaining available for school repairs.

The campaign has raised more than £75,000 since launching at the school year's start. Classrooms are regaining blackboards. Bathrooms are becoming functional. Windows are being installed. Children sit on proper chairs rather than bare frames. Syria's education ministry, responding to the initiative's momentum, sent 380 desks. The work continues. The gap remains vast. But in Talbisseh, residents are demonstrating that transformation doesn't require waiting for top-down solutions—it requires showing up and believing one school, one classroom, one child matters enough to give time, skill, and effort.

When Animals Lose It: Science Finds Play Calls That Mimic Laughter

Human laughter has always been somewhat mysterious to evolutionary scholars. We clearly laugh as part of play, signaling cooperation or friendliness, but how did it evolve? And are we really the only ones who do it? Not even close, according to research from UCLA.

Primatologist and UCLA anthropology graduate student Sasha Winkler and UCLA communication professor Greg Bryant combed through existing scientific literature on animal play behavior, specifically hunting for mentions of vocal play signals—what might be considered laughter. Their findings, published in the journal Bioacoustics, documented such behavior in at least 65 species spanning mammals and birds.

The researchers analyzed whether animal vocalizations were noisy or tonal, loud or quiet, high-pitched or low-pitched, short or long, single calls or rhythmic patterns—seeking known features of play sounds. Since much of animal kingdom play is rough-and-tumble and can resemble fighting, play sounds help emphasize non-aggression during physical moments, similar to how humans use laughter to signal we're having fun and invite others to join.

Bryant notes that this work reveals how a phenomenon once considered particularly human actually ties closely to behavior shared with species separated from humans by tens of millions of years. While further research into vocalizations would prove fruitful, such observations can be challenging to capture in the wild, especially for animals whose play sounds might be quieter.
